Eighteen years ago, the peace accords were signed in the small Central American country of El Salvador, closing the book on civil war and bringing an end to government-controlled oppression and death squads. Since then, this little country the size of Massachusetts has all but vanished off the map for those of us in the States.
On December 17, this could change. You and all your friends are invited to come to the Bryn Mawr Film institute for this first-time theatrical screening of “Return to El Salvador”.
You will meet a Salvadoran couple who fled death threats in the 1980s, finding asylum and a political platform in the United States. You will meet a couple who, after studying in Brazil during the worst part of the war, returned to El Salvador to work with churches and poor communities in the department of Santa Ana. You will meet the family of a murdered anti-mining activist and people seeking the truth about his death. You will meet human rights officials who have worked diligently for decades to record and name the atrocities that occur every day. Most important, you will experience the hopes for the future of the Salvadoran people and find significant ways to walk with them in their journey.
The filmmaker, Jamie Moffett, graduated from Eastern University and was a founding member of The Simple Way, serving the Kensington community. This film reflects his commitment to justice for the global community and his willingness to confront systemic evil.
Tickets to the premiere are only $10. You are also invited to join the production team for a reception starting at 7:00 before the show starts.
